Have you ever dreamed about seeing the vast Russian countryside? Are you petrified of driving throughout Russia? Then consider traveling by train on the Trans-Siberian Railway.
This gigantic network of train tracks spreads over 6,000 miles, from Moscow to the west coast harbor city of Vladivostok. That’s not even including the other routes that run to the northern section of Siberia and those that run throughout China to Beijing. There are few facts that you should be aware of prior to boarding a train so that your experience is a positive as possible.
Security Russia does not have the best image when it comes to theft. But that’s not necessarily the case when traveling aboard the Trans-Siberian Railway. On board, there are plenty of women and children that travel on the train on a daily basis. If you’re a woman traveling alone, it’s best to request a sleeping car that only has women. And when it comes to your valuables, keep them on your person at all times. There is a safe place that you can store your bags and any other valuables at night. If there are any problems, just alert one of the car attendants.
Smoking policy Just as Russia has become more “western” in other areas, its smoking policy on board trains has also become more “western.” There’s a no smoking policy on board the Trans-Siberian Railway, but if you happen to be a smoker, don’t despair. Smoking between the cars is permitted.
Separate tickets If you think that you can get off and on the train whenever you want with one boarding ticket, guess again. You’ll need to purchase separate tickets each time you leave and re-board the train. But don’t wait to the last minute to purchase the tickets. Plan your itinerary before you leave for Russia so that there will be plenty of space available.
Charging your phone and laptop Though the train has plenty of regular outlets for reading lamps, finding a socket to power up your phone or laptop is another story. You won’t find any on the train, but if you tip one of the attendants on board, they might agree to charge up your phone or laptop in their personal sleeping car.
