Accommodations in a hotel are pretty straightforward. There are single or double occupancy rooms, suites, rooms with a view, rooms with a balcony and even one or two bedroom rooms.
When traveling on a cruise ship, accommodations are similar but the small differences between the different rooms can make a real difference in your vacation. To help you understand the nuances, we’ve listed the main differences between the rooms (called cabins) as shown below.
Interior cabins Interior cabins are the least expensive accommodations. These cabins are located within the interior of the ship. There are no windows or portholes, so if you have a tendency to become seasick or you’re claustrophobic, it might not be the best choice. However, if you’re on a budget, it might be the perfect solution. These cabins are typically much smaller than an average size hotel room (from 120 sq. feet to 180 sq. ft), and room amenities are a bit scarcer. You may or may not have a bathtub in your cabin. You will, however, have a stall shower.
Exterior cabins One step above the interior cabins is the exterior cabins. Like its name suggests, these cabins are located on the outside of ship, with either a porthole or window (doesn’t open up). Porthole cabins are located on the lower levels while window rooms are located on the upper levels. Cabin size is similar to interior cabins as are the amenities but rates are bit higher.
Balcony cabins If you’re looking for a better view and some refreshing ocean breezes, then consider a balcony cabin. With a balcony, you’ll have the opportunity to keep your sliding glass door open or closed throughout the day or night. The actual balcony size might be small, but there’s usually enough room to sit outside on a lounge chair. Balcony cabins are more expensive than exterior rooms, but might just be worth the extra price.
Suites Suites come in all sizes. There are mini-suites (additional living room area), one-bedroom suites and even two-bedroom suites. Some of these suites are so large that they compete in size with luxurious hotel rooms. They’re usually equipped with the latest and best amenities as well. And if you really want to be pampered, butler service is included in some of the suite packages.
