Sharing a Cabin when Traveling on a Cruise

Traveling alone has its benefits.  You can travel when and where you want without compromising or arguing with your travel partners.

On the other hand, it can have its downfalls such as costing the same price for a room.

But when traveling on a cruise, it doesn’t have to be that way.  On a cruise ship, there is the possibility of sharing a cabin, which means that can receive a discount on the usual cabin rate. However, before you jump into sharing a cabin, here are a few suggestions in how to choose the right roommate.

Age
Choose an age group that you feel comfortable with.  If you’re in your 20’s, choose someone who is also in their 20’s, and perhaps early 30’s.  If you’re traveling alone and you’re in your 60’s, then try to choose a roommate that is equally mature.

Smoking
If you’re a non-smoker, does cigarette smoke bother you?  If so, request a non-smoking roommate.

Sleeping habits
If you have a chance to interview possible roommates (such as on some of those online cabin mate sites), find out their sleeping habits.  Do they like to go to bed early or do they like to stay up late reading a book?  What about waking up in the morning?  Are they late risers or are they up at the crack of dawn.  Another important factor might be if they snore and you’re a light sleeper, or the other way around.

Social butterflies
Try to find out if your potential roommate likes to entertain a lot.  If you’re outgoing as well, it might not be a problem.  On the other hand, if you value your privacy (especially in a small cabin), think twice about choosing a social butterfly.

Drinker
Do you mind if your roommate drinks?  Find out their habits, as you probably don’t want to roommate with another who is constantly drinking and has disruptive behavior.

Privacy
Do you mind if your roommate brings in another person to stay over?  If so, make that clear and if they object, go on to the next candidate.
