Relaxing beaches and waterfront resorts, bustling cities, small rural towns and villages make up the beautiful Caribbean country of The Dominican Republic.
Located on the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, the Dominican Republic is home to the highest peak in the Caribbean as well as the lowest point and has all the makings for a fun, relaxing vacation. Some of the biggest attractions for tourists in the Dominican Republic are the all-inclusive beach resorts, which line nearly the entire beach coast of the country. Many tourists come to stay in resorts, eat and drink well and lounge by the beach to get away from the stresses of daily life. However, more adventurous tourists will find that leaving the resort behind and exploring the diverse country can be exciting as well. Start in the city of Santo Domingo, a city that Dominicans refer to as “La Capital.” Santo Domingo is teeming with diverse culture, great food, shopping and nightlife. While in Santo Domingo, you can walk the cobblestone streets, visit one of the oldest churches in the world across from Parque Colón, and visit the Museum of Modern Art, Museum of National History, National Museum of History and Geography, and a number of other museums and sites. If you are looking for fun, then stay in Santo Domingo into the late evening, or head to the La Vega district for great dancing and carnival parties. If you are looking to experience nature, then head to The Península de Samaná. The Península is made up of rolling mountains and beautiful shorelines. Go hiking, walking or relax on the beach. Península de Samaná features a whale-watching trip that is not to be missed, as well as snorkeling in the peninsula’s most beautiful reefs. For a taste of history, head to Reserva Antropológica El Pomier, just north of San Cristobal. Reserva Antropológica El Pomier is home to limestone caves filled with thousands of ancient cave paintings. When you get hungry, have your fill of delicious tropical fruits, beans, rice and meat. Dominican food is a delectable mix of Spanish, Taino and African cuisines. The delicious food, relaxing beaches and resorts, beautiful attractions and culture make the Dominican Republic one of the top travel destinations in the Caribbean.
